Walt Grace – What does it mean to you?

Earlier this week I was driving home from a fitness class I take and listening to ‘Born & Raised.’  I have become a sucker for ‘Walt Grace’ (my favorite on the album) and tend to listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row each go through of the album.  For some reason this time I was listening to the words a lot more closely than I usually do and just thinking about what John says.  I really just wanted to understand the song a little better since I love it so much.  While listening I thought wouldn’t it be fun to post a song on JMMA and see how others interpret it, what the song means to you, or even what is your favorite line in the song.  When I got home I viewed the JMMA wall on Facebook and saw that someone posted about misheard lyrics and knew this was something that would be fun and had to be done.

In connection with this post the first song we will discuss is ‘Walt Grace’s Submarine Test 1967.’  What is your favorite line?  What does the song mean to you?  What do you get out of the song?

I will post my answers on JMMA Facebook so head over there for some great conversation!

For me it’s a metaphor for john’s bad phase, and taking a break from all of the shit and coming back feeling great hahah :D
I really love the part when he says: “That morning the sea was mad and I mean it” pretty simple but its something about the lyrics and the piano coming in, It just touches me very deeply, and always gives me chills :)

i think its saying that you can do anything you want to do. you can even take a fan blade and make a homemade one man submarine and drive it to tokyo if you want to. even though people say you’re crazy and that you will fail, if you have a will to work hard and a library card you can do whatever you want to do to change your life. i also think that walt survived. i know that the common interpretation is that he died. but it actually does say that his wife wasnt expecting the news she got. she had accepted it, but what was told was unexpected. (i love the library card line.)
